How can legalizing drugs help the economy

Marijuana is known to cure all kinds of chronic pain including those associated with certain illnesses. Cannabis is even being researched further as it has been shown to kill cancer cells, and this use can be tapped further for tremendous benefits. The lung function is also said to improve after smoking pot, and it has been found to improve mood as well.

Glaucoma and spasms have also been treated with marijuana. In the case of seizures, medical marijuana use has been found to reduce their intensity or to control them altogether; a reduction in overall symptoms has also been noted. America has understandably been under the microscope in for its law enforcement policies regarding minorities. However, in a number of areas Britain is actually guilty of more discriminatory policies than its transatlantic ally.

More black people are imprisoned proportionally in the UK than the US, and when it comes to drug-related arrests, black Britons are six times more likely than the general population to be arrested, doubling statistics in America. This is despite a lack of any evidence to suggest black people are more likely to use or deal drugs than their white counterparts.

The economic effects of incarceration are incredibly damaging for the individuals themselves and their families. Young men are on average three times more likely to enter the criminal justice system if they had a parent imprisoned at some point during their childhood. With minorities so disproportionately represented in prison, there is no doubt that these convictions exacerbate economic inequality between different ethnic groups.

Wiping out the swathes of unnecessary arrests for offences such as cannabis possession would be a hugely positive step towards achieving that. With a rational, evidence-based approach to drug legalisation, one founded on concrete outcomes rather than tabloid hysteria, Britain could achieve substantial savings and bolster public tax receipts.

In doing so, we would go some way towards rebalancing an economy that for too long has discriminated against minorities to the detriment of all. As marijuana becomes legal in more and more parts of the country, it's likely that the price will drop overall as a result of commoditization.

This may not immediately seem like good news for overall tax revenue or for marijuana companies looking to maximize profits. However, individuals utilizing marijuana-based products for medical treatment would stand to benefit considerably from lower prices for these items. There is ample pushback against the idea of legalizing marijuana across the country.

Critics cite the potential for confusion among law enforcement officers aiming to keep up with shifting regulations, a concern about increased homelessness or youth use of the substance, the potential for decreased property values, and much more. Some are opposed to changing the regulatory status of marijuana simply because it means a change to the status quo. All of these reasons combine to decrease the likelihood that marijuana will become legal at a national level any time soon.

However, as more and more states move to individually decriminalize pot use in various ways, and as the economic benefits of a legal marijuana industry take effect, there are also many compelling reasons to consider nationwide legalization.
